Responsible for using emergency, lifesaving, damage control, and safety equipment on a merchant ship, performing general maintenance, repair, and sanitation duties, and standing watch to ensure the ship maintains a steady course.

- Sit up and watch as a helmsman.
- Maintain a steady course, follow all rudder orders properly and communicate using navigational heading and steering terms.
- Stand watches related to safety, such as a gangway watch or anchor watch, while the ship is not in motion.
- Perform general maintenance, repair, sanitation and renovation of deck department materials, equipment and areas.
- Maintain the metal structures of the ship by chipping, scraping, washing, priming, and painting.
- Hull, decks, superstructure, freight gear and smoke stack were swept, restored and patched.
- Perform lifeboat repairs, rescue boats and life rafts, and control equipment for emergency and damage.
- Using emergency equipment, lifesaving equipment, management of damage and protection.
- Perform all operations related to lifesaving equipment launching.
- Operate deck machinery during mooring and un-mooring, such as windlass or winches, and operate cargo gear.
- Look for obstacles in the vessel's direction.
- Cut down, rig, repair and store equipment for cargo handling, stationary rigging and running gear.
- Navigate the vessel and interact visually with other vessels.
- Lowers and raises winched or fallen lifeboats.
- Using visual communication aids, such as light and semaphore blinkers.
- Gives crew instructions.
- Assists with the cleaning of the deck and performs various unit duties separately.
- Regular maintenance for preserving the ship's painted surfaces and maintaining lines.
- Part of the emergency response team on the shipboard.
- Once appointed to be watch-keeper, he is responsible for correspondence, safety watches and deck watches during operations.
- Informs third party inspection and maintenance safety executive.
- Measures water depth in deep or unfamiliar waters and provides bridge data.
- Upgrades lifeboats and lifeboat gear and winds or drops up or down.
- Using hand tools to splice and patch cables and ropes.
- Performs any other duties that may be required or delegated
Qualifications Required
- High School Diploma or GED is required. It is expected to have vocational training.
- Operational experience related to ship crane and deck for one to two years.
- Training in the oil and gas industry in the Gulf of Mexico is favored.
- Knowledge of procedures for the SMS shipboard.
- Credential of merchant mariner (Z-card) with endorsement of AB Unlimited.
- RFPNW (Rate Forming Part of a Navigational Watch) approval of STCW-95 (Standard Training and Watch Keeping Certification).
- Valid license for driver.
- Valid card for TWIC.

This job is considered to be OFFSHORE WORK defined as follows.
- Day and night outside and indoors, as well as over / near air.
- Requires moving equipment or vibrating equipment to operate on or close.
- The temperature is often higher than 90%, the sound is more than 85 decibels and the light is bright.
- Potential fire / flames / sparks opening view.
- Constant exposure to dirt, fumes, and contaminants in the air.
- The surface of the work is solid, the height is high.
