Job Summary:

This position is located in the United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, The position does not have an academic qualification requirement. Specialized experience: experience directly related to the role to be filled. Specialized experience shall be described for each grade level advertised.

The professional qualifications criteria forGS-09 include one year of specialized experience equivalent toGS-07, which is directly related to the job of that position and which has provided the candidate with the expertise, skills and ability to perform the duties of the role effectively.

Specialized experience:

Performing various aspects of research projects on the basis of the overall goals set by the supervisor, such as participating in a biological science research project related to the environmental survival and physiology of enteric pathogens, including the quantification of bacterial populations; carrying out biofilm tests; and evaluating growth rates under various conditions applicable to plant and crop development.
Conduct a research project using various molecular biology techniques such as PCR, real-time PCR, RT-PCR, DNA and RNA extraction, gene replacement, genetic cloning, and simple DNA sequence analysis.
Operating a variety of highly specialized complex equipment that must be calibrated and synchronized to achieve the desired results, such as Spiral Plater and Ominilog, Maintaining strain database, preparing bacterial stocks for long-term storage, and preparing various growth media for laboratory use.
Maintenance of chemical inventories, preparation of solutions and reagents for use in the laboratory, field or greenhouse, and safe disposal of waste materials (both chemical and biological).
Substitution of education: 1 1⁄2 years of progressively higher education related to any biological science field;
Combination of experience / education: an appropriate combination of specialized experience and graduate level education directly related to the work of the position as indicated above.
GS-9: The criteria of specialized qualifying experience forGS-09 include one year of specialized experience equivalent toGS-08, which is directly related to the job of that position and which has provided the applicant with the expertise, skills and ability to perform the duties of the role effectively.
For this place, you must meet at least one of the specialized experiences mentioned above for the GS-8 and must meet at least one of the specialized experiences described below:

Develop and improve techniques and procedures within the experimental process with minimal supervision
Perform more complicated data analysis, generate graphs, prepare reports to summarize research methods, progress and results.

Substitution of Education: Master's or equivalent degree or 2 complete years of School Graduate degree or LL.B. Or J.D., related to any biology field
Combination Experience / Education: an appropriate combination of specialized experience and graduate level education directly related to the work of the position as stated above.
