Job Summary:

The applicant will be responsible for assisting senior archaeologists in surveys, research, field supervision and laboratory studies; preparing written information such as site forms and reporting sections; and working closely with other cultural resources personnel, Rincon's clients and Native American members. There is a need for familiarity with California's ancient and historical cultural resources and the past of California's culture. Experience with GIS is preferred; the candidate should have experience in collecting Trimble and/or Garmin GPS data. Applicants should have good organizational skills. Conduct field work (e.g. survey, site inspection, site analysis, data recovery, construction site monitoring, and archeological site condition monitoring) under the supervision of staff.

Responsibilities:

Conduct research at libraries, agencies, and other institutions to record scientific, historical, and ethnographic information.
Prepare, in accordance with RHPO, scopes of works for contracts to perform cultural asset research on the DNWR network.
Perform archaeological surveys, site identification and site evaluation using traditional archaeological techniques to comply with Section 106 of the NHPA.
Research, prepare and complete historical documentation (letters; agreement papers; location, plan and evaluation reports) for accordance with the NHPA and academic-oriented study using methods and formats appropriate to the State Historical Preservation Offices, manuscripts suitable for specialized technical publications.
Determine the impact and provide information, reasoning, policy and legal compliance for such determinations.
Provide alternatives for decision-makers on the management of cultural resources, approaches and processes to address the issues of historic preservation laws and regulations and other cultural resource concerns in an appropriate manner.
Update and preserve your computer records.
Collaborate with project proponents, partners and staff of the FWS, volunteers, Tribes and other archaeologists.
Serve as a link between the FWS and the Tribes.
Establish and consult with the Tribes on all issues related to cultural resources.
Prepare and conduct educational and outreach activities, presentations and events that provide information on the Refuge's cultural resources.

Qualifications:

Must have a Bachelor's degree in Anthropology, Archaeology or closely related fields
Must have at least 1 year of experience in the field of archaeology under the supervision of a qualified archaeologist.
Experience in conducting archaeological surveys and excavations
Ability to meet deadlines; detailed coordination, organisation and ability to work well on parallel tasks
Expertise in taking comprehensive project notes; outstanding verbal and written communication skills; competence in gathering field data using the Trimble Global Positioning System (GPS); ability to navigate using the US Geological Survey;
