Archivist or Librarian

Job Summary:

Expert archivist in the storage and cataloging of special collections, including papers and documents by authors, owners, dealers and critics. Dedicated to the advancement of knowledge and appreciation of the visual arts and their history. The Research Institute's special collections include rare books, prints and drawings, rare photographs, works of art from the 20th century, extensive audiovisual material, and more than 25.000 linear feet of archives and manuscripts. Reporting to the Director of Special Collections Cataloging and Storage, the archivist may work closely with colleagues across the Research Institute and may contribute to scholarly and social media activities.

Responsibilities:
  • Work independently on assigned projects to improve access to archives and other special collections 
  • Survey collections and develop and implement processing plans 
  • Arrange, process and re-establish collection materials 
  • Create and enhance assistance on the basis of current standards, best practices, research and analysis 
  • Identify conservation concerns and implement basic conservation practices 
  • Maintaining knowledge in standards, systems and specialized subjects 
  • Research, writing, presenting and publishing collections and work activities may contribute to outreach activities.
  • Responses to requests for information from employees, leaders, the library community and the general public.
  • Serves as administrator for a variety of library specific database functions.
  • Obligation for day-to-day office management duties, such as billing, ordering, statistical reporting and file maintenance, is also a regular obligation for this role.
  • Creates catalog records, both by copy cataloging for the general collection and by original cataloging for electronic resources.

Qualifications:
  • One or more doctoral degrees in Library and Information Studies, Art History or similar discipline Minimum 5 years of professional experience 
  • Requires advanced subjects, languages and/or technological knowledge.
  • Clear knowledge of principles such as DACS, EAD, MARC and RDA 
  • Good writing and communication skills 
  • Ability to work both individually and collaboratively 
  • Ability to work in team-based or cooperative settings 
  • Ability to lift and move 40 pounds 
  • Ability to climb ladders 
  • Demonstrated subject-matter expertise of art history, photography and contemporary art is favored.
  • Strong reading of knowledge of at least one foreign language in the GRI Collection Areas preferred 
  • Experience with Archives Space or other Collection Management Systems preferred
